Martha Karua, a lawyer and presidential contender in Kenya, says she was expelled from Tanzania, where she had been set to attend the trial of a senior opposition figure facing treason charges.
Karaua has called the action an indication that Tanzanian authorities will not provide Tindu Lissu, the leader of the Chadema party, with a fair trial.
For his claimed misdeeds, Lissu, whom Karua claims is Tanzania’s president Samia Suluhu Hassa’s primary rival, may be subject to the death penalty.
Because Lissu’s Chadema party refused to sign an electoral code of conduct, it was disqualified from the October presidential and legislative elections.
Tanzania is witnessing a “total erosion of democratic principles,” according to Karua.
Concerning “democratic backsliding” in East Africa, the former justice minister has been outspoken.
