Historic Moment: Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes First US-Born Pope

The Catholic Church has a new leader, Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, an American-born cleric from Chicago, Illinois. At 69 years old, he becomes the first-ever US-born Pope in the Church’s 2,000-year history. His election was announced on May 8, 2024, from St. Peter’s Basilica, following the traditional white smoke signaling the end of the papal conclave.

As a seasoned Vatican official and member of the Order of St. Augustine, Pope Leo XIV brings significant experience to his new role. Before becoming Pope, he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing bishop appointments worldwide. He’s known for his quiet yet firm leadership style, deep theological understanding, and extensive pastoral experience globally.

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at 88. This historic appointment marks a significant moment for Catholics worldwide, especially in the United States.
